How And Why To Use Activated Carbon In A Fish Tank?

CarbonwaWhen you have an aquarium, you need to be sure that you are taking care of it. If you do not put in the right measures, your aquarium may get dirty and this in turn can harm the fishes and impact their lives as well.

As you should strive to avoid this situation, you need to come up with some of the best solutions which can help you in keeping the fish tank clean. One of the commonly used methods has to be the application of activated carbon. Those who are wondering as to how it serves the use, read on to get acquainted with the same.

The process of absorption and adsorption.

Activated carbon is a strong adsorbent which means that all the unwanted molecules and impurities which are present in the water tank stick to the pores present in the activated carbon molecules.

As the impurities bond with the molecules, they are no longer present in the tank. They get flushed away with the activated charcoal molecules. Similarly, the pores present in these molecules also helps in absorbing the unwanted impurities. Hence, owing to the dual action of absorption and adsorption, activated charcoal turns out to be an effective product for the sake of cleaning the fish tank and getting rid of the unwanted dirt particles.

Not only the impurities, one can also find that the tank will become odor free as well. There is however a lot of debate going on regarding the amount of carbon that must be used and the duration for which it stays efficient. It is hard to come up with final deductions, but you are required to change the activated carbon molecules timely because they do turn out ineffective after a period of time.

Are there any problems with its use?

There have been a few reports that indicated that activated carbon was the major cause of HLLE in fishes. While there is a lot more research that has to be one, one needs to be wary about it. Also, activated carbon molecules can end up removing even the useful fertilizers and chemical components from your fish tank as well. They have no means to know what impurities are and what useful fertilizers are.

This is the reason; you are advised to consult a professional before you start using this chemical in your fish tank.

How to use activated carbon?

You can simply buy mesh bags and place activated carbon molecules in it. Place this whole bag in your filter which is present in the fish tank and you will be all set to find  your fish tank getting a lot clearer every day. You can change the carbon molecules periodically to ensure that you get the maximum output from this process.

While there may be dual opinion about how effective the use of activated carbon is; one cannot deny the fact that it does help in keeping the tank clean and thereby will offer you a beautiful aquarium.
